Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The Ram was something of a work-in-progress, with constant small changes throughout the production run. Montreal Locomotive Works was a subsidiary of an American firm producing M3's so it is probable that similar changes were effected. I managed to find my old AFV Profile (#13, Ram and Sexton, 5 Shillings), which included some interesting information.

Changes to the Ram II (ie 6 pdr) gun tanks include

Modification From vehicle

Side doors removed CT-40131
Pistol ports in place of doors CT-40131
Pistol ports deleated CT-40543
Assess plate on turret rear CT-159502
removed, belly escape hatch adopted
Aux. machine gun turret dropped CT-159502
Improved 6 pdr mantlet CT-159599
Improved R-975-C1 engine, new Late production
mufflers, improved air cleaners
Improved VVSS suspension with Very late production
trailing idlers, heavier springs
and CDP tracks

Since the purpose built Ram OP tanks were built during the last 6 months of production, it follows you could get away with an early version of an M4 suspension. However, since earlier gun tanks were also subsequently converted to the OP function, ( gun and turret basket removed, dummy gun, opservation position with stereoscopic telescope and vision slots in the turret front, hydraulic traverse removed and manual traverse limited to 45 degrees either side of center line, 2 No.19 and 1 No.58 sets fitted), your options are close to endless.

The Profile contains a number of interesting pictures, including the fitting of mud chutes between the bogies (also seen on some British M3's). Unfortunately, it has none of the really close-up detail pictures seen in some modern publications.

Hope this helps.

Brock
