There were two types of battle track seen on the Jagdtiger. The Porsche chassis vehicles used the original Tiger II track, which combined a wide link with two guide teeth alternating with a narrow link without guide teeth plus two little connecting bars which connected the outer sections of the wide links. It used an 18 tooth sprocket. This was a terrible design, and all the Tiger II tanks except the five issued to Panzer Lehr Division received the replacement track, which had two links of equal length, one with guide teeth and one without, and used a nine tooth sprocket. This track was also used on all Jagdtigers except the Porsche vehicles, which used the early track, but with one of the two guide teeth cut off with a torch (seven of the Porsche chassis machines were issued to the 653rd Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung).
The final Tiger II battle track was the single link variety which again needed the 18 tooth sprocket. It was seen on a few Tiger II tanks near the end of the war, but not seen on any Jagdtigers. |
