Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

I have several photoetch sets for the Trumpeter kits from Lion Roar, Part, Eduard and Aber. Truly, most of the parts are unnecessary given the finesse of the Trumpeter tooling. The kit stowage boxes look great and I would only replace them if I wanted to show them open or damaged. The fender braces are already pretty thin, and can be sanded thinner if you like. Under a coat of paint they would be indistiguishable from the brass.
In my opinion, the mesh screens are the only vital brass items needed, and Aber and Eduard both offer replacements. The cheapest Eduard set includes mesh but no frames, which isn't very useful, but the larger sets (numbers 088 and 089) include the frames (oddly, Eduard's full set for the KV actually has an inferior design for the screen frames). I like the engineering of this set, as the layers of the frame are etched as one unit to be folded together, which is easier than trying to allign the edges of several pieces of very fine brass. The Aber screen sets depict a finer mesh and the frames are a bit more fiddly to build without a bending jig like the Hold and Fold.
I have the Lion Roar set but can only recommend it for the KV-2 Model 1939 "Big Turret" version, as the engine deck screens are correct only for that version. Their KV-1 set has the wrong type for any of those models.
