Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Ron,

Fine Molds has basically made Japanese armor and artillery. To my knowledge the only items they have made that isn't Japanese are some accessory sets for German and US armor.

At first their kits were outragely expensive (as example their Type 95 first sold for $110). The detail on their kits have always been pretty good and have become very good on their latest efforts. The first armor piece, the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, had several fit problems. Their latest kit, Type 3 Chi-Nu, is very good and in the same league as any major model compamy.

Their figure sets could be better in that the rendition of the figures is not as good as DML or Tamiya. On the plus side their figures are very accurate in stature being that the average height of a Japanese soldier in WW II was5'4" an NOT 6'. The figures seem small but ar e in actuallity the correct height.

Where Fine Molds excells better than any other company in my opinion are their artilley pieces. To date I know of an 81mm motar, Type 94 37mm ATG and the potent 45mm ATG. These are done in a very finely cast white metal and the detail and fit are exceptional. They go in and out of production but really worth getting.

I've already posted several builds of their kits on Track-Link and plan a few more now that the Pacific theme is on. I just have to find some time to photograpgh and download (slow you know, dial -up only) at home.
