Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Their new Star Wars kits are EXCELLENT, if not very expensive, especially in the US. They are also relatively small kits (1/72 scale). Quality is top notch, though.

Fine Molds aircraft are variable. They sell some older kits (Judy, Claude, Kikka, which are total crap) and some new stuff that is real good like the 1/72 Messerschmitt 109F. Downside again is the US price, as FM stuff is not widely imported. In the US the Messerschmitt 109 (a 4" model) has an MSRP price of nearly $60, but you can order it from HLJ for under $20... Older kits are really basic, with some crudely done metal parts, although newer reissues are all plastic. Molding is a bit rough, and fit can be poor.

The tanks are fairly nice. Most are newer and pretty neat. I like the little Japanese tankettes. On the other hand, the Type 95 Ha Go, an important vehicle, is an awful kit. It is poorly molded (tons of flash) ill fitting (air intake has 1/16" gaps all around) and sparse detail overall. The kit used to be $114!!!!!!!! back when Mark Up Polo was importing it. The review of the kit in MMiR magazine said they should be called "Not So Fine Molds". Again the newer stuff is better but you need to know what you are getting.

FM also has the annoying habit of marketing accessories seperately from the kit that should be in the box to start with. Like the crappy Ha Go kit... you need to buy the detail set seperately. For a kit that even today runs $35-$75 (for the SNLF version) you would think that you would get the small detail set with the model.
