Thx gentlemen for all the info.
I currently have all of Tamiya's Tigers. Loe & behold, yes, the intial & early kits do have the proper turrets. I've also dug my mid-prod and sure enough is the right one.
I haven't gotten out my late tigers (you always need a spare) to check but it will probably be correct, I got them a few years ago.
As you guys mentioned, it is noticeable in 1/35, if you know what to look for.
I am not a rivet counter, but it can drive me nuts when something is plainly not correct.
