I would guess that it is foundry specific, sort of. All it would take is a larger blend radius between the "bulge" and the turret, or a little less draft taper on the turret, or a little draft taper on the "bulge" to make it indistiguishable in photos. If a particular foundry did one of these things and another didn't, it would appear to be a foundry-specific feature.
