Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Ken,
It depends on what style of Firefly 1c you want to build.

For the Hybrid, both CMD and TWS make the composite hull. I prefer CMD's version. The old Italeri/Testors M4A1, Tamiya Early M4 or the DML M4A1 Early all make suitable donor hulls. M4 Composites were made with both straight and upswept return roller arms.

The Composite or Late M4's were built with either the late low bustle without the pistol port or a high bustle turret. Formation makes the late low bustle in Firefly configuration, along with most of the parts you will need for the conversion.

Armored Brigade Models makes a high bustle Firefly turret. Here is a review:

For a Firefly 1c with the welded hull, you can use the Tamiya M4 kit and either the Formation's Firefly Conversion kit above, or the CMD Firefly turret set, which also contains the necessary conversion parts for the hull.

Tank Workshop also makes an appropriate Firefly turret that did not contain the hull parts, but, as they are under new management and have redone some of their sets, I can't say if this is still the case. Might be worth a look.

For the welded hull Firefly 1c, you will also need to backdate the suspension to the earlier straight return roller arm style. Formations makes a conversion set, or you can do what a lot of us do and swap the suspension out from an Academy M36 which really needs the upswept arms, but comes with straight.

hth,
mike
