Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hi Mike,

It's an older model from the Tamiya stable (early 1970's). It has a rather complete interior, working 'click together' track links, and, if my memory serves me right, a kind of working suspension too. But no metal or PE included. Together with the 1:25 Centurion, these were for some time the Tamiya "TOP ARMOR KITS".
Compared to the new 1:16 Tiger I, it shows its age, being rather basic and simplified in some areas. But as far as I remenber, it was reasonably sound scalewise, and with some TLC and a little scratchbuilding it can be made into a nice model. Alltough I would prefer the 1:25 centurion kit, as it's just a tat better. But they stay 1970's models, so don't expect an asymetric turret or that "DML" level off detail!
Aftermarket goodies like tracks, barrels or PE, is (was?) limited to a set of 1:25 friull tracks for the Centurion kit. Perhaps there is (was?) more on the market, but I've never encountered it. The Centurion and Tiger I were by a wide margin the best from the Tamiya 1:25 kit range, I would strongly advise against all other kits in this serie! I believe Academy has used the Panther A from this serie to do a G recently, allthough this might be a completely new kit.
The 1:25 Tamiya Tiger I is a kit I would advise to an experienced modeller with a nostalgic streak. ;-) I think the best thing to do, is to ask the shopkeeper to allow you a peak in to the box before making a decission!

Alex
