Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Alex,
The 234 series has three fuel tanks for a total of 360 litres of fuel(except 234/4). The one above the rear driver would appear to be the auxilary tank, the two main tanks are in the angled cheeks of the engine compartment, The filler caps are under the access panels either side of long slatted grill above the engine. Tech Intel 2 has a photo of a destroyed Puma that depicts it well. Also in the The Museum Ordance special their is a good shot of these on an intact vechile, also showing the fuel lines from the three tanks terminating in a fuel filter/pump. My estimate is the the Auxilary tank holds from 60 to 80 litres, the two main tanks 140 to 150 litres each. The fuel filler locations would be an issue on a Gasoline powered engine, but not on a diesel engine. Still filling the tanks over the hot heads of the engine would be disconcerning.

The Fug 12 radio set is located in a frame next to the rear driver (Tech Intel 2 ETO Technical intelligence report no.169), I am not sure of it's oreintation but along the port side wall there is space and an electrical distrubution box adjacent to the hatch. So facing the rear drivers side would make sense.

The Batteries are located on the Starboard side on the shelf next to the driver. These are 2 x 12v 120 amp hour batteries (Motorbuch Verlag Radfahrzeuge 1905-45, Walter Spielberger). These are the same batteries used in Early Panthers and Tigers. I would imagine that the same type of installation would be used with the wooden surround, heating pad and metal lid, with six evenly spaced holes in two rows of three each. The Metal lid anchored to the base under the battery holding it all in place. The Fort Knox 234/4 may have clues to a different method of clamping them down. A battery in this installation is 210mm high, 560mm long and 315mm deep. The shelf on all surving 234's have 4 battery leads at about the mid point of the shelf, one is an earth from the adjacent wall, one lead goes back under stowage of the shelf back to the altenator/generator. The other two make their way back to a switch, distrubtor and filter device. The switch would be used to change over the batteries from float charging to being active. The switch looks like it would be part of the fuel system, but only electrical cables are connected to it.The batteries are mounted either side of these cables. The small bracket on the floor in the nose of the vehicle under the hatch in the nose, looks as if was intended for a battery, but is too small for one of these batteries. It most probably held a first aid kit. This battery installation coincides with the long range requirement of the 234.

As for the ammo stowage the storage of the 234/2 is explained in Tech Intel 2 report, as for the 234/1 it needs 25 clips of 10 2cm ammo and 12 200 round bags of 7.92mm ammo.I know that some of of the MG Bags, would be hanging on the inside front of the turret ring on the commanders side, there is some wall space available on either side of the compartment so I suppose that this is where the the 2cm ammo is stored. I am not sure that it would be in one rack. I look forward to how the Cyber Hobby upgrade presents this feature.
Regards,
Trevor
