Alex,
I agree w/ you about the 'false economics'. I normally avoid the lesser kit, unless I've had it before the prime kit comes around.
I am leaving on vacation tomorrow for Europe to visit my in-laws, and I won't have easy access to a (well stocked) hobby shop (Tamiya is very expensive). RVG kits are easy to find however (cheap), from the toy store to large-surface stores a la Wal-Mart. I will succomb to the burning desire to work on something, and have little room to bring kits over (I travel w/ 2 toddlers). [Don't know how I would bring back what I build.] All these days at the beach, and I will get bored (no TV because I don't get the language). [All that time with nothing to do, ...'cos of the in-laws busy spoiling the kids...]
