Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The original 1/35th scale kits from the late 1950's included the M29C Weasel, M34 Reo Eager Beaver truck, Jeep and 37mm antitank gun (Jeep and M34 truck have been rereleased by Revell Germany), a set of infantry figures which included a motorcyclist, 60mm mortar and M60 machine gun team, as well as various combat figures, M13 Halftrack with dual .50 calibre machine guns, M3A1 halftrack (sort of--used the M13 body and the fenders are rounded like an M9), M48A2 Patton tank (the last gasoline version). All are very basic by current standards, but the M34 and the Weasel are still the only game in town for those versions. For the Patton, you can kitbash with the Tamiya kit to make a reasonable replica, and the truck can be crosskitted with the AFV Club M35A2 for a better representation. Also in 1/35th scale was a Navy Underwater Demolition Team boat based on a British landing craft.
In 1969, Monogram switched to 1/32nd scale, and added their Panzer IV Ausf. J (mislabeled as an H, and the first release had the antenna housing on the rear plate for a command tank). They also did the Sturmgeschutz IV and the Wirbelwind quad 20mm antiaircraft tank. In the early 1970's, they introduced an M3 Lee and an M3 Grant, an M4 and M4A1 Sherman (with the early Lee suspension), an Ostwind 37mm antiaircraft tank, and finally an M8 and M20 US armored car and a German SdKfz 232 armored car.
