Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hey Frank:

Thanks for the summary of fixes. You might also want to add three armored ventilator fan covers (2 on the hull top, and one on the turret, I think). This was a later production addition, and I'm not sure when they appeared.

You could pretty much do a OOTB build with the following fixes:

1. Leave off the hull storage boxes
2. Use the kit early exhaust
3. Use the M2 (short barrel) 75 mm without the counterweight
4. Fix or ignore the height issue with the bogeys. Guess Academy was trying to stretch out those Sherman parts and made a muddle of it. Like you, I've ordered the Formations fix. supposedly, Steve Zaloga will have a detailed article in Military Modeling on how the fix the kit pieces?
5. Remove the inerior belly escape hatch "to nowhere" (no scribing on the EXTERIOR!) Guess the belly escape hatch appeared later in the production, at least when they removed the side doors, maybe earlier?

That would give you an early M3, for which I have found the following schemes (NOT in the kit decals)

1. 1st or 2nd Armored Division during stateside pre Pearl Harbor manuevers. Decalcomanicas makes a sheet for this.
2. A Soviet Lee - see Zaloga's color painting in his recent Osprey on the Lee, or p 22 of ths same, which definitely shows no stowage boxes and early exhaust, BUT with grousers. MIG productions has markings for these beasties.

HTH
