Hi Frank,
I understand your impatience, was it on my workbench, I too had all other project swept aside! I've 4 or 5 other books with data and pics on this gun, I shall make you some scans early next week and e-mail or post them to you (if I post them, I can send you a paint chip EisenBahn Grau too). I think you allready know, but just to be sure, that the 17cm gun (on the same site) has basicly the same rail way carriage with only some small modifications. So you can safely use pics of this gun's rail way carriage for reference for your kit. The gun shield can be quite easily added to your kit, perhaps a little scratch build suggestion, it look so much more cool that way ;-)!
Regarding the 31cm GlattRohr K5e. Almost all publications claim the proper 28cm K5e prototype to be this gun. This is the infamous picture with the 'bare' rail way carriage and the steel truss structure supporting the barrel almost halfway up. This support was originally designed with the purpose of preventing barrel droop. As it worked out, this was not nescesary and only the prototype used it, the Ausf.B though stil had the attachment points for it on the cradle.
Two GlattRohr barrels were produced and are said to be installed on carriages. At least one was used to shell American troops in Maastricht from Köln.The only visible difference from the normal K5e was the slightlly bigger bore lacking the rifling and of course the weird kind of ammo handled on the gun platform.
Untill now it's not known if these carriages were Ausf.C or D, and if these were grey or yellow painted (the barrels though should most probably have been yellow, but even that is in question as these could simply have been rebored worn out older barrels) but they should have European railway gauge as they were allegedly used only there.
I would recommend you to take a try at the Trumpeter kit, as the Dragon one is rather crude and incomplete and realy a waste of time imho. Eduard does do a nice PE set for the Trumpeter, but if you can mis the money, buy the Eduard Dragon K5e PE set too for your Trumpeter kit. There is some overlap of course, but it does provide beautifully etched ladders that the Trumpeter set lacks. Mind you, the Trumpeter kit has Russian rail way gauge, so you have to modify that for a GlattRohr gun.
If you need additional information when you start the project, try the one35th site, and of course you always can send me an e-mail. Happy to help.
Cheers,
Alex |
