Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Subject:  Re: DML - StuG IV vs. Tamiya/Italeri kit-bashList thread.

The Dragon StuG IV was the first of their kits based on the Gunze Sangyo Panzer IV chassis parts, which are very decent, dating from 1991 or so. The 1977-vintage Italeri Suturmgeschutz IV was better than Tamiya's 1975 tooling, but I cannot imagine any advantage in kitbashing the old Italeri superstructure onto the current Tamiya parts.
I'm not sure what the other poster was referring to when he said Dragon's kit had no suspension--either his kit was missing parts (unusual for Dragon), or he means that it has no workable suspension--in which case, so what, neither does Tamiya's.
Dragon offers an early Sturmgeschutz IV variant, like the 1/35th Tamiya, Italeri, Academy or 1/32nd Monogram offerings, as well as a late style Sturmgeschutz IV, with the rotating, "Hetzer" style machine gun mount. Included a photoetched machine gun shield on the original boxing of the late variant, though I don't think the Shanghai Dragon re-release had it.
As for whether your kit bash is worth it, well, it depends on how much you consider your time is worth. Building the Dragon kit out of box or with the aftermarket gun and mantlet would be much quicker.
