| Subject: | I use both depending on... | |

Hi guys,
I use both brands. Friull I prefer with 'simple' heavy tracks, eg. KV, T55, Tiger II, etc. MK I prefer for the lighter more 'delicate' tracks, eg. Pz III/IV, Cromwell, etc. and for heavier complex tracks, especially those with open guide teeth, such as the Tiger I, Panther and Elefant.
Sometimes I've to go with Friull as MK does not make the type I'm looking for, such as MTLB or Crusader tracks, and they are indeed a little beefier/cruder then I would wish for.
Friull tracks are more sturdy and easier to handle, but with the smaller tracks miss out on detail. They also have a tendency to stretch a little with time. I always replace the 'wire' with 0.5 mm brass rod to avoid to much play. MK tracks on the other hand are more fragile and more time consuming (cleaning up especially) to build.
In the Netherlands MK tracks are significantly more expensive then Friull. But I understood that in Germany the opposite is the case, perhaps someone can explain that?
For Shermans, both VVSS and HVSS I prefer AFV tracks as the Friull ones are substandard and the MK are bad for your mental health! (They look great when finished but after two sets I've had it with them.)
I loath resin length tracks, the ones you've to heat and bend, I've never had a satisfactory result with them. Resin (klick together)link link ones I've never build, but I like to try them at least once.
So IMHO it's not just that one brand is 'better' then the other, it's more a question of finding the right solution for the specific vehicle. Both brands have their pros and cons, and sometimes you simply don't have a choice.
Cheers,
Alex
PS.
Does someone know if Armour Track Models (they used to be in the Trumpeter catalogue) still excist? I'm desperately in need for their M1 tracks as I'm scratchbuilding1 a 105mm M1 Abrams. My shopkeeper can't find them anywhere. |
