Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Mike, M4 (75mm) production ceased at various plants at the end of '43. The last M4 hulls were produced by Chrysler (Detroit Tank Arsenal)and were the so-called Hybrid hulls. They ceased production in Jan '44. At this time the 105mm howitzer pgm got started. The pilots for the 105 were Hybrid M4s, made in Feb '44. When it got to production again, Chrysler resurrected the fully welded hull to make the M4 (105). They stayed in production until Mar '45, with about 1641 vehicles made, 800 were VVS, 841 were HVSS.

Chrysler was also producing the M4A3 75w, 76w at the same time so it was logical that the M4A3 (105) was produced there too. 500 with VVS were built starting in May '44. Another 2539 were HVSS, production ceasing in June '45.

Basically, all the howitzer tanks were made at Chyrsler.

Why all this discussion about the howitzer tanks? Because no other factories made "late" M4 hulls. The only HVSS M4 hulls were howitzer tanks made at Detroit tank arsenal.

Now I agree that some M4A3 75w with HVSS and M4A2 75 (wet or dry?) did get manufactured and probably saw some combat. I've seen photos of the M4A3 75w HVSS in an Italian depot ready to be shipped to the PTO.

This makes total sense -- but not an M4 with HVSS and 75mm: only an M4 (105)HVSS.
