Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hi Glenn,

I think I prefer the Friulmodel tracks. I recently had the opportunity to work with three different kinds of after-market tracks, almost side-by-side, and my preference is pretty much on the die-cast tracks. The tracks are:

Friulmodellismo IS-2, IS-3 tracks
Modelkasten SK-34 tracks for the T34/85.
AFV Club T84 tracks for the Shernman

The injection molded tracks are well-detailed, but kind of complicated to assemble, even with the multiple method described by the instructions.

The cast metal tracks are tedious to build (toothed link, non-toothed link) and the wire that is included is not the stiffest item to work with, but the weight of even a partially completed track seems to feel right. It'll definitely add mass to one's kit.

As to it being beefier, I think that it might simply be an optical illusion because it is brighter. I snipped off a link from the vinyl track I had for comparison and they seem to be identical in size. Mind you, I've only had these ones for comparison.

I'm actually am awaiting three sets of Friul tracks from eBay to be delivered. One for a King Tiger (late); a Tiger I (late); and a Pz.Kpfw.IV (Ostketten tracks).

I may try using brass rods as one of you suggested (good idea!).

Cheers,
Allan
