Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hi Al,

The Tamiya Panzer IV J kit that you have included a picture of is a great kit and one of their new-tooled models. It is really nicely detailed and perfectly engineered, but it doesn't contain individual tracklinks or PE like the new Dragon Pz IVs do, so it's quite simple compared to the new Dragon Panzer IVs, but like I said it's a really nice kit. Tamiya have also released this kit with Eduard PE zimmerit in the box. Tamiya actually have two Panzer IV H in their catalogue - A recent release that shares most of it's parts with the afore mentioned J, and then an H kit from the 70's that is pretty much obsolete by today's standards. The "new" Tamiya Panzer IV H is very similar to the Tamiya Panzer IV J but it contains a few mods to the wheel sprues and an additional sprue containing parts specific to the H version(and side skirts) and a nice new commander figure in cold weather gear. The H is a great kit just like the J but I like the H a little more as it's slightly more complicated as it includes more parts. Back to the old Tamiya H from the 70's - It's not a very detailed kit compared to the new versions. The lower hull and running gear are severly compromised accuracy-wise to make way for motoization. With some TLC I'm sure that the old H could be made into a nice kit, but personally I'd spend the extra bucks and get the newer version. The Tamiya Stug. IV - Same deal as the old Tamiya H. The Stug is based on the old motorized Panzer IV hull and the rest of the kit is typical mid-70's style detail. Again, with some TLC it could be made into a nice model but I'd go for the Dragon Stug IV without hesitation.

HTH,

Alex.
