Hey folks,
First off I'd just like to say that your models look really great John - Hopefully we'll see them finished soon.
There are six 1/35 Bergepanther kits out there that I know of. There's the On Track(Bergepanther G), Precision Models(D) and Verlinden(A) resin conversions, there's the Italeri(A) and ICM(D) plastic kits, and lastly there's an ancient Sovereign(A) resin/white metal conversion for Tamiya's OLD Ausf.A - I had this last one and it's best left unmentioned...;-) Tony Greenland made a master for converting Gunze Sangyo's High-Tech Panther G to a Bergepanther, it was to be released by Kirin but it unfotunately never saw the light of day. Tiger Model Designs announced a Bergepanther conversion for the Dragon A a LONG time ago, but so far...Also, Blicz Models announced a Bergepanther conversion for Dragon's Ausf.D a while ago, but so far....
I have the On-Track Bergepanther conversion. It cost me $125 USD on eBay, and to be honest I'm not entirely sure that it was the best use of such a large chunk of my pocket money. The casting and detail of the On Track kit is very crisp. The winch assembly is really nicely done, as is the spade. Unforunately there are some pretty glaring inaccuracies in the On Track kit. It seems that On Track used the real Bergepanther G in the French tank museum Saumur(sp?) as reference, and it seems that this museum Bergepanther has been modified by it's post-war owners. The 2cm KwK bow mount springs to mind(not on wartime Bergepanther Gs, but in the On Track kit). Another anomaly with this kit is the inclusion of a Panther A/D engine deck - A throwback from old incorrect info from Spielberger's Panther book as well as Squadron/Signal's Panther book. It seems that back in the day, folks believed that early Panther Gs shared the same engine deck as a Panther A/D - Check out Gunze Sangyo's High Tech Panther G Early - It has large rectangular Ausf. A/D grills!? So the On Track kit wants us to hack the perfectly correct Tamiya upper hull and add this incorrect replacement casting - Easily left out, but afer spending so much dosh on the kit it's kind of annoying to find out that major components of the On Track kit are totally wrong and best omitted.
If I had an unlimited resource of funds for building a Bergepanther model, I'd use the winch and the required exterior stuff from the On Track kit, and then the CMK Panther interior sets for the insides(MUCH better than the On Track interior parts). I guess the plastic bits would be best taken from the new Dragon Panther G.
But, hopefully all of the above is soon made moot - If Dragon can make a Bridgelayer Panzer IV, I'm sure they could do a Bergepanther! :-)
Cheers,
Alex. |
