Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The controls for the winch were on the bulkhead near the hull wall behind the radio operator. I have no good photos but look on page 129 (right photo) of Culver and Feist (1998) Panther in Detail - there is a lever (moves forward or backward) on the far side of the bulkhead just below the tarp before you get to the sponson floor. There is a long rod that connects to the clutch band - see Waldemar Trojca No 4 (Pp. 110-111). The rod (folded backward in this photo) in the upper left photo on page 111 engages the winch. The forward and back lever is next to this but have no photos of that anywhere. Please see the cover story article in Tamiya Model Magazine (Jan 2005), page 11 for the clearest look at the set up. But note that the photo on page 129 noted above does not correspond to the model.

Unfortunately, the French Bergepanther G is broken down so that visitors can view the winch. The Waldemar Trojca No 4 has excellent views of the winch compartment but none of the operators end, i.e. the driving compartment.

For my Berge, I used the lever control piece for the winch (part No 13) from the Italeri sWS Panzer Werfer 42 (kit No 356 or alternatively 370) as the winch was not used on these models (only the sWS cargo verson used it). I used insect pins for the levers but used a small drop of super glue for the handle.

The engaging lever can actually be linked as the prototype using the VP Update set - you have to supply the wire. The actual had a slight dog leg bend.

When I get a little further along, I will send some more photos.

Thats the best I can do and hope this helps.

John
