Well I've built both kits and in spite of the price difference between the two I'd start off with the Tamiya Panther G Late. I've read many comments on the internet that would suggest that the Shanghai Dragon kit will give the Tamiya kit a run for its money. I wholeheartedly disagree.
The rubber band tracks on the Tamiya kit are far better than the indy-link tracks of the Shanghai Dragon kit. The track sprues on the copy of the Shanghai Dragon kit I bought had so many short shot tracks that I had to use spares left over from another Dragon Panther.
The overall dimensions on both kits are good but the devil is in the details. I spotted the dimensional errors on the Dragon mantlet when the thing was still on the sprues.
The rear hull plate need filing where indentations for the hooks were left on the mold in spite of the fact the mold was remade for the new hook locations.
The Dragon kit lacks the vents that go over the engine deck screens, and also lacks the hood that goes over the driver periscope
There are no bolts on the inner drive housing on the Dragon kit.
The tools and exhaust are far superior on the Tamiya kit. I'd go so far as to say that there isn't a single piece of the Dragon kit that is equal to the finesse of the Tamiya molding. I could probably go on and on.
If you own the Shanghai Dragon kit give it to someone to get them interested in the hobby. It doesn't stand up side-by-side to the Tamiya kit but it goes together very well and can be a fun build.
Nevertheless Dragon's smart kit surpasses Tamiya's effort. It has many details both the Shanghai Dragon and Tamiya kit lack. Of special interest are the magic tracks with the guide horn holes. The tools with the molded on tool clamps are also a piece of art.
I've attached a photo of the Tamiya kit built OOTB. |
