Engines...it's all about the engines.
The M4 and M4A1 shared the whirlwind radial aircraft engine, which accounted for the high silhouette of all Shermans, since they had to accommodate this tall engine.
The M4A2 had a diesel engine.
The A3 had a Ford V8 gasoline powered engine.
The A4 had a Chrysler multi-bank engine (several engines attached together, which accounted for its slightly longer chassis).
The glacis angle has nothing to do with it. All of them, except the A4, were changed from an earlier 60-something degree hull to a 47 degree hull later in the war. The Red Army tank you have has this later 47 degree hull, which allowed for no more weak points in front of the driver hatches and also larger hatches for the drivers to be able to escape from.
