Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The spotlight on the turret top was a standard issue item, but was usually stowed inside the tank and the mounting capped unless it was needed. Night combat operations were relatively rare for tanks, and nobody wanted to be the first one to turn on a light on a battlefield, so it rarely appears in photos.
The suffix on Sherman subtypes refers to the engine package (except for the M4A1, which had a cast hull, but the same engine as the M4), rather than successive production models--most were in production concurrently. The M4A2 had pair of diesel bus engines, and can be distinguished by the narrow engine grill on the top deck, the steep upper tail plate, and the dual mufflers and exhausts on the lower tail plate. These diesels were not wanted by the US Army, and were allocated to the US Marines and Lend Lease users. The Soviet Union got about 8,000, split about evenly between 75 and 76 mm models. The M4A3 has a wider intake grill on top, a flared out upper tail plate and a large diffuser grill under the hull overhang for the exhaust.
