Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The current Revell Germany and Italeri kits are the same mold, the former Esci kit. They are excellent representations of an M60A1, though the turret casting is probably not correct for most A3's. It has the best detail overall, though. Tracks are link and length styrene. The Esci kit also appeared in AMT and Ertl boxes at one time.
Tamiya's kit is a partial update from around 1990 of their 1970 M60A1 kit. The wheels were new, depicting the later steel version (Esci's kit had the finned aluminum wheels). The turret casting was newly tooled and has the correct side contour for a final production version (no undercut at the base of the turret side where it meets the turret ring). The kit is let down by the hull, which is the 36 year old mold, and the detail is poor (fender outriggers molded as part of the stowage boxes, box handles molded as bumps, and rear fender tie down detail that is imaginary. It does offer the later top-loading filter boxes (Esci's has the earlier side-loading version). Tracks are vinyl.
The various Academy kits are also derived from a pirate version of Tamiya's revised kits, though Academy has retooled some details since.
