Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hi Jason,

I'm referring to the circular plate on the left hand front corner of the turret, eg. in front of the loaders hatch and to the left of the over pressure valve. On marks II and III (first 500 produced between 1947-50) a combination loaders sight/2inch bombthrower was mounted here. On the following MKIII (1950-early1951) the loaders sight was moved to the turret front 'glacis' (as it is on the AFV kit) but the 2inch bombthrower stayed in its former position, during this transition time the turret design changed from the 39887T design (as per tamiya kit) to the 40796T design (see the cast in number on the left turret side on the AFV kit), this new turret design also discarded with the turret rear hatch. Mid MKIII production (1951-54) still had the bombthrower mounted, only to see it discarded on the 1954-58 production run which included the last MKIII (till 1956) and the whole MKV (1956-58) series. First the aperture was plated over, later on it was no longer cut into the turret roof plate. As a lot of the Centurions were rebuild/updated some time or another, the vehicle in the pictures could have started live as a MKIII.
The splash guard along side the loaders hatch though is a new feature to me, I shall have to study my pics again to see if and when it occurs.
A few close up pics of the welding beads on the hull roof to the hull side (around the turret race, that is), and the glacis plate to the plate that houses the drivers hatches would be very welcome. So, if you could find some time, I would be very obliged!
Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Alex
