I've used several different brands of third-party zimmerit (e.g., Eduard metal, Cavalier, Atak). I've used Tamiya paints on all of them via an airbrush and have had no issue with them sticking. I've subjected them to oil paint/turpenoid washes and dry brushing and haven't had any problems. (I did give them plenty of time to dry before doing this (a week).
In terms of air bubbles, maybe it's been the luck of the draw, but I haven't had any issues with my Cavalier sets. The five sets I've purchased have been just fine.
