If you are thinking of European rails for the WWII period - as has been pointed out they are different to US rail. Take a trip to your local model railway shop and ask for some Gauge 1 european style track which is approximate to 1/35th scale
The real life measurement for most european rail is 4 feet 8 and 1/4 inches. Russian track was seven feet I think, The German rail engineers simply moved one rail closer, leaving the mounts (called chairs) in situ and replacing them with a new set. It was easier to do this than try to lift the metal chairs without damaging them.
Take a look here http://www.gaugeone.org/index.htm as there are several links some of them in the US.
