Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

I've should have warned you that my other hobby is model railroading. So, sometimes numbers just come naturally for me with me offering any proof or supporting information.

One source that I got the information from is Woflgang Sawodny's "German Armored Trains in World War II: Vol. II 1939-1945". On page 7, the author states, "...several armored trains built to the wide Russian Gauge (1524 mm)...The available normal-gauge (1435 mm)..." Converting that over to english is. The 1524 mm measurement converts over to 5-foot gauge.

A little harder for me to provide reference (simply because I don't have a particular book handy) is that the U.S. locomotive manufacturers (ALCo, Baldwin, etc) produced some locomotives of the 2-10-0 wheel arrangement for the Czarist railroads prior to 1917. Some of the locomotives were never delivered. Rather than scrap them, the companies replaced the 5-ft. gauge tires on the drivers with wider tires for standard gauge and sold them to various U.S. railroads. These locomotives became known as "Russian Decapods".

I hope this helps and explains things somewhat.
