Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Actually, Tamiya's turret is just as good as Esci/AMT/Ertl/Italeri/Revell version--it just depicts a later variant. The final turret casting batch eliminated the undercut at base of the turret sides, an area that had suffered excessive penetrations during the Yom Kippur War. However, as you said, the Tamiya hull is their original 1970 tooling, which has too many key details molded in place rather than separate, it has motorization holes to plug, and some details that are completely fictional (the tie downs and other details on the rear mudguard flaps).
If one doesn't mind the early wheel details and the intermediate turret casting, the Revell/Italeri item is by far the best choice, though the outer part of the gun barrel on the original tooling didn't have the thermal shroud--presumably the tank they examined had had it removed for some reason. Don't know if the re-release corrects this or not.
