Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Hi Duncan

The Dragon SSy Plattformwagen is too small to carry a Tiger which had a combat weigth of about 56 to 57 metric tons.
There were also the "Transportketten" (i.e. transport tracks) of considerable weight (about 4 tons, if im not mistaken) which were to be stowed plus the outer roadwheels of the tank which were taken off and had to be placed on the railway car as well.
I think there was a calculatet security margin but an overload of 20% or even more would have put too much strain on the vehicle anyway.

I've read somewhere that there were even Panthers put on to axle flatcars but I can't remember the source and I would't bet on it.
The Tiger tanks were carried on SSyms 80 ton six axle flatcars which were specially equipped with the beforementionned "Transportketten" for this purpose.

As for the 1/35 kits there is one made from Azimut Productions of France in their "Ironsides" series. The model looks quite good, is injection molded, easy to build and not expensive (it wasn't for me at least). As far as I know, the kit is still available.

Concerning the dimensions of the SSy flatcar I haven't measured it yet but I'll give them to You as soon as I've dug out the kit.

Kind Regards

Arun Bauer
