Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Pete, I assume you mean Dennis Olivers Brit Sherman book (Concord 7062) as I am unaware of any by Steve Zaloga on the subject of Brit Shermans. If this is correct then have a look at page 28 and 29 (lower photos) or upper colour plate on page 38. The vehicles depicted are all Sherman III and cover the points regrading the use of the DML kit. OOB all you will have to change for the 8AB vehicle - pge 38 is the Turret stowage box (and renmants of Waders) . These are available in resin (Verlinden, Resicast, Accurate Armour, Formations) or ask someone with the DML M4A4 Tulip, second or third release Firefly (With 60 lb Rockets) as these kits contain spare Stowage boxes of the pattern commonly found in NWE.

The 4/7 vehicle needs T49 tracks but the ERY one on page 29 uses the same t54 as supplied in the kit but needs and a full mantlet shield. Note the applique armour plates and no sand shields. Note these vehicles have 1 piece tranny cover.

For M4A2 in Normandy look at 27 AB and 8 AB vehicles (Also have a look at the 8 AB vehicles on page 65). It's not always easy to tell from front on shots but useful tip is that if its from 33 AB its a Sherman 1 and if the Hoods have an undercut its an M4A4 (all have 3 piece noses)(Guards or 11 AD). All 3 hull types (DV, Welded and Cast hood) served in NWE so you have to match your photos carefully. 8 AB had a lot of 3 piece tranny covers and cast hoods in service. The Staffs picture on page 45 (top) shows what appears to be a Cast hood with 3 piece tranny but with t49 tracks (second vehicle)
I hope you find this helpful, if you have any further questions drop me an email

Cheers
Al
