I think that the pricing differences are disappearing. Looking at the new Dragon King Tiger at $80 MSRP, and the standard $40 for other kits from them now, Tamiya doesn't seem that much more.
And I was at the LHS the other day, and there's little difference in on the shelf prices for the Tamiya, Dragon, AFV Club and other kits. Trumpeter remains cheaper - for now.
And for 1/48, don't forget Hobby Boss. Those kits are popping up now.
I agree there's something different about Tamiya's approach, of course. They don't seem to mind going out on a limb for some kits. And the 1/48 to 1/35 migration is interesting (Hetzer and so on).
