Mike,
You may want to check if the area where you stored your kit was near an ungrounded electrical source or appliance. Electric current can cause a condition known as electrolysis in blended metals. Each one of the metals reacts to the current differently which will cause the disintegration of the cast metal. Also, Dragon may have used a batch that was not balanced as far as its composition and the dissimilar metals may react the same way because of the imbalance. It could be a combination of both of these situations as well.
