David,
Steve Zaloga replaced the molded on straps with brass ones so he wouldn't have encountered the problem. But if you look, his straps are matched to the mounting brackets.
Practically, the straps are actually mounted to the brackets and tied down on the other side. Kind of like a modern tied down strap. The way Tamiya has them, they're out in space with no obvious way to attach them to the hull or mounts.
