Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The kit looks like an early to mid 1943 production model, with round transmission cover, pistol port on the turret left rear, and the applique armor on the right turret cheek.
Turrets procured in the middle of the year had no pistol port, and the turret cheek armor was thickened (the new Firefly kit has this turret shell). For mid to late 1943, I'd expect to see that turret shell and the round transmission cover.
The pointed, "Mary Anne" transmission housing became available around August, 1943, though various factories had backstock of the old version to use up first.
I suppose there may have been some late 1943 models with the late transmission housing and possibly the restored pistol port before the 76 mm turret and wet stowage hull went into production in 1944, though I can't recall seeing a photo of one.
And of course, these changes were introduced piecemeal, and some parts were used out of order by the assembly plants, so you might see a number of mismatched parts on a particular 1943 tank. Some M4A1 Sherman DD amphibians had the large hatch hull with integrally cast thickened armor instead of the applique panels on the hull, the late transmission cover and the 75 mm turret.
