Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Arun,

As others have said, fixing the Verlinden kit isn't worth the effort. It really isn't. You end up doing entirely too much work and still don't end up with a kit that looks right.

You're far better off taking one of Rob's OP kits and backdating it to an early/mid Ram with the sub turret. I can walk you through that if you're so inclined. Anything that requires the use of the Tamiya Lee/Grant will be 1/8" (3mm) too wide and no aftermarket transmission housings will fit (they just fall into the opening between the hull sides).

The Verlinden turret is also too wide by about a scale foot and ther shapes are awful. Rob's turret is lovely and needs only a few tweaks to represent a gun tank as opposed to an OP.

One of the key things to get for a Ram, though, is some WE210 track. RHPS made some and now, apparently, Dragon have some in the new Sherman III kit. (I think??)

As for drawings for scratchbuilding, the Hunnicutt book drawings are good for locations & overall placements & sizes but don't capture teh subtle shapes of the castings well. You need photos. Lots and lots of photos, if you are to get the contours right. Rob's kit has these almost perfect and the small tweaks aren't difficult.

Let me know if I can help,

Paul Roberts
