Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The Tamiya M4A3 is appropriate for the Phillippines and on of the markings (Classy Peg) is a tank used in the Phillippines. Many people see this kit as old and needing a lot of work but I must disagree.

You can build a very nice representation of the M4A3 by making a few simple improvments.

1. Fill the lower sponson holes. Simple sheet plastic works fine and Formations makes a resin set if you'd prefer.

2. Fill the backs of the roadwheels or replace them. I've filled the backs using epoxy. It's not terribly accurate but after painting and weathering you can't see it anyway. I've also fixed the idlers by gluing some half-round strips (available at your LHS) on the back side and then pouring a bit of white glue of them. The whole thing blends together and looks just fine after painting and weathering. Or you can buy a replacement set from either Formations or Tiger Models.

3. The upper hull needs to be re-welded. The M4A3 welds are raised not recessed. I've done it by laying a 0.015 inch plastic rod (again you can find this at you LHS) in the weld recesses, softening it using Tenax and then making the weld shape using a putty knife. Takes about 1 hour the first time.

4. If you really want to add some detail, the Eduard photoetch set for this model is excellent and really upgrades the kit.

5. Formations makes a great set of tools that are also a nice upgrade.

6. The kit comes with a number of figures and stowage. Use them. That'll hide any remaining errors in the kit.

Hope this helps.

Jim
