A small batch were test fitted with the new track in August/September, 1944, and issued to the 506th Battalion. These tanks also had Zimmerit. The 506th had a distinctive marking system that had the company number to the left of the turret cross, and the individual tank number within the company to the right (a two digit "speed" number, 01 through 14--they didn't bother with platoon numbers). The battalion saw combat around Aachen, and lost about a third of its strength in the autumn fighting. It was brought back up to strength with newly built tanks in December and committed to the Ardennes Offensive.
The tracks were apparently deemed satisfactory, but the old inventory of the double link tracks had to be used up, so the new design doesn't appear again until March of 1945. |
