According to "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two", Peter Chamberlain and Hilary Doyle, there were two series of SdKfz 221 produced, both on the sPkw 1 Horch 801 chassis. Unlike the SdKfz 222 and '223, this model was not upgraded to the sPkw Tyoe V chassis with larger engine and hydraulic brakes, and fitted with 30 mm frontal armour. The first 143 produced had the fabricated vision ports, while the remainder utilized cast ports. 339 were produced between 1935 and May 1940.
Given the production dates, there is no reason that either production series couldn't have been in Russia. In fact, when retrofitted with the SpzB41 2.8 cm gun, some 221s are reported to have been in service up to the end of the war, |
