This is getting into the "grey" areas of Panzer legends (Bad pun). The
references I would put most trust in all but say they weren't any grey ones
at all.
As you have probably noted lot of DML kits released a few years ago are
rather vague about unit markings and places, so that gives me the impression
they didn't spend too much time researching their kit's painting schemes,
and probably got much of their info from the "standard" older books like
PAnzer Colors, in fact you will find a lot of their kits markings in the b/w
photos of Last of the PAnzers.
The research point is further reinforced by the fact all of their Hetzer and
Jagdtiger and Jagdpanzer IV kits variants have an uncanny resemblence to
Hilary Doyles scale plans in two German language books (which is a good
thing).

My guess is not overly thick. Skoda and BMM were both high quality
manufacturing plants with large export bases prior to the war. Its normal
for paint to show thru rust, incidentally red is a good color for hiding
some rust.
BTTW a PAnther A early in Italy sounds like a good choice.
Cheers
