Adam,
Lynn Kessler wrote a short article in the Sept 2002 FSM about
painting tracks. He suggested:

1) a blue-black-brown color for the base,
2) wash with an acrylic mix of black, brown and isopropyl alcohol
3) drybrushed with a steel color mixed in with the base,
4) and finally a very light all steel color drybrush.

I tried parts of the technique (left out the alcohol and used window
cleaner in step 2 and used a graphite pencil in step four) on a couple
beat-up old tracks and liked the results; so much so I adopted it for my
PST KV-9 tracks.

HTH,
Steve
