Basic German Army and SS uniforms were field grey throughout the War. Camo was widely used, especially by the SS and by all services as the war went on, but never replacing FG totally. Field Grey is one of those colors that varied a lot in real life depending on the time the clothing was manufactured. It is generally a greenish grey color, like the various model paints depict. Later fabric could be brownish. Then the color could also fade... as in the tropics where European uniforms were still worn. Tamiya's shade of paint is a little greener than Humbrol's Uniform Grey. Both are passable. I use Poly Scale's version, and also really liked the now discontinued Floquil Field Grey. Andrea's color is good, too. Only Testor's messed it up, so avoid that one.
