Well it depends upon the timeframe and the army. For the modern American
stuff, there are issued cards that show how the paint should be applied
and the depots, factories and the field painting is supposed to all be
painted that way. If you see a line of vehicles you will notice that all
the paint is applied in pretty much the same way all along the line.
Many modern armies also do the same, having supposedly developed an
"official" pattern that they "officially" declare to be optimum.
Sometime the field repainting doesn't follow the cards, but in
peacetime, painting by the numbers is how most are done.
Paint cards for most US vehicles are available, especially the MERDC scheme.
