Hi Ed, long time, no see. I've used Tamiya acrylics exclusively for
years and here's what I've found. I use a Paasche VL double action and
always a fine tip.
I usually thin a 1:1 ratio for basic painting. Using less thinner can
cause the tip to plug and/or sputter. Thinning more means backing off
the pressure and the amount of paint, but you can even apply a wash as a
dust haze. I usually spray @ 30-35psi, less for heavily thinned paints.
As far a thinners go, I've tried rubbing alcohol both the 70% and the
99% and the results haven't been as good as when I use either Tamiya
thinner (read: expensive) or windshield washer fluid (read: cheap!).
Both Tamiya thinner and washer fluid work as a "wetting" agent for the
paint, keeping it flowing smoothly. When I used alcohol, adding some
soap helped, but not much. The color tint of the washer fluid doesn't
appear to affect the paint color at all either.
And make sure to have a moisture trap installed on your air line and not
the little dinky inline ones the art stores sell. Otherwise, you'll end
up with a nice splattery paint job with the water compressing in the
line and the air tank.
Cheers,
Bob |
