What you have asked is kind of a tall order, as some people are happy with certain basics and other modellers wouldn't touch an out of the box project with nothing less than a full compliment of the latest specialty tools.
Some basics that I use on ANY project would include:
X-Acto #1 knife or equivalent, and spare #11 blades
Sanding Sticks or sandpaper in meduim and fine grits
Tamiya Extra Thin liquid plastic cement or equivalent
Zap-A-Gap CA glue or equivalent
Sprue Cutter - Tamiya or Testors/Xuron are nice
Pin Vice with small bits
After that some more advanced tools would be a set of needle files, an X-Acto or Zona razor saw, needle nosed pliers and some tweezers, especially if you find you will be working with wire or photo-etched parts. A Testors/Xuron photo-etch scissors is a must too for p-e if you get into that. Powered tooled like a Dremel are useful on ocassion, but not that often to warrent a purchase up front. A good quality airbrush is not absolutely necessary but certainly does help with multi colored camouflage that is otherwise virtually impossible to duplicate realistically. A good compressor is the natural next purchase to go with the airbrush. The little cans of compressed air will work but at $10 a can for 12 minutes spray time they add up quickly and for a can a month, you would pay for a compressor in a year's time.
Paints are a personal thing. Some people love acrylics and some stick with enamels. Tamiya, Testors (acryl and enamel), Humbrol all offer good paints. Experiment around or use the brand that makes the color you need for a particular model. |
