Most of the rifles I've seen in the Army were straight black (perhaps a satin black as they had a little "sheen" IIRC) drybrushed with a touch of silver for where the paint wore of the aluminum metal parts on the recievers. The actual barrel I'd paint a very dark metallic color as it was distinctively different from the recievers.
The rifle I was issued with at Ft. Knox, however, was an unusual one; it must have been a re-build as it had a metallic upper reciever and a black painted lower reciever (made it easy to find!).
