1. I fired/maintained/carried several that had blueish-black finishes on
the metal, even at 1 to 1 scale, just for the record. Hence the term
"blue steel". Not only that, but the bluish tint put into black paint
helps avoid the "blackhole black" effect when painting.

A growing number of modelers like to emulate the "scale effect" of light
now. If you look at a black piece of metal from 70 feet away, it won't
appear completely "black", rather a combo of dark colors; grays, even
some browns, or, dare I say, a tinge of blue or "gasp", purple,
depending on the metal, it's condition, and lighting. So, people like to
emulate this effect by "cutting" the paint some. Most colors can be cut
with white and be fine; black can't. Start adding white and it turns
murky gray. So, a lot of people use dark blues or even purples to help
this "scale effect" with black paint.

2. You forgot the metal door plate at the butt end of the stock where
the cleaning kit is kept. It's metal too. And FWIW, the magazine is
usually a distinctly different shade compared to the rest of the rifle
at times.

3. Even during the rainiest, dirtiest DMZ patrols in Korea,
or sandiest sandstorms in the Gulf War, our weapons were expected to be
kept damn near pristine, or at least in "issue condition"; ergo there
weren't many, if any, times were a "muddy" rifle was seen for long.
Since the concept of "free time" is non-existent in a deployed setting,
you spent any and all time maintaining that bullet launcher and cleaning
it up.

If it got dirty, it got cleaned up almost immediately or else it
wouldn't fire. The M-16 series is a good, accurate, easily maintained
weapon with tendencies to be very delicate. For durability, not much
compares to the Soviet/Russian AKM series, which will continue to fire
after sitting at the bottom of a river for two days.
