Hi Jan, some modellers layer coats of paint to give the effect of a worn surface.
Start with a Dark coat of Black and Olive drab mix, you can spray this selectively in Shadow areas or over the whole tank.
Then a coat of Olive Drab sprayed lightly over the first coat, trying to leave "shadows" of dark in crevices etc.
then a "highlight" coat of Olive Drab and Desert Yellow ( or a yellow brown colour ) sprayed very lightly on high use of exposed areas.
This will give you a multi-tonal effect and 3-dimensionalize the tank.
Care should be taken to spray the coats so they Blend together.
I think this gives a very nice starting point to your weathering technique. A Filter applied after this will help blend all tones together.
Hope this helps. ( by the way, i'm new at this too! )
