Hi MIG and all,
I don't think "who invented what" or "what is the correct term" are important, only an understanding of how to apply the technique (that's all I was curious about).
What ever you call it, the effect is important.
"Filters" are a pretty clear term for the technique. The differences in a wash and a filter are subtle and subtle differences are difficult to understand in the beginning. Don't get too exasperated MIG, I think there will always be questions like this from armor modeling "newbies" like me :-)
cheers, tracy
